SAD AND SUDDEN DEATH OF HARVEY NESTELL.
SUPPOSED TO BE A CASE OF ACCIDENTAL
SHOOTING OR SUICIDE
Between 12 m. and 4 o'clock p. m. Monday, Harvey Nestell, a well-known citizen of this township, died suddenly. In the absence of a coroner's inquest the following particulars have been gathered by the TIMES correspondent: Deceased was found in the granary of his barn by his youngest son, Dalzina Nestell, about 4 p. m. The latter was ploughing near the barn and was attracted thereto by the report of a gun, when he was horrified to find the lifeless body of his father lying in the alley of the granary, the head toward the east and facing the south. The granary is in the southeast corner of the barn. The cause of Mr. Nestell's death is a mystery, and some of his neighbors suppose that he committed suicide, while others believe that he accidentally shot himself. He told his son to place the loaded gun in the barn as he wanted to shoot squirrels, and the son put it there about 9 a. m. The gun was found in the main bin in the southeast part of the granary, resting against the outer boards, which were stained outside and inside with blood, as was also the grain in the alley and in the bin. A loose board which lay across the main bin from north to south, bore a deep mark which exactly fitted the hammer of the gun.
Deceased had been engaged cleaning grain with his fanning mill, and the chaffing sleeve was found under his shoulder, stained with blood. He had spoken about cleaning out some screenings of wheat and other grains
to be taken to the mill and ground into feed for his hogs, and had set that work for himself to do Monday. He was cheerful and remarkably cool and collected at noon, when he was met and spoken to by several neighbors, and by a harvesting machine agent. He was anxious to hire a broadcast seeder for fall sowing, and had just taken a three years old colt out of a team to train to single driving, and did not seem in the least discontented or unhappy. There is a mystery surrounding his death which time may reveal; but the only explanation is either accidental shooting or suicide. People hereabouts think it strange that a coroner's inquest was not held. | Nestle, Harvey M (I141)
